If you have been through the reviews but still unsure about the factors to consider when buying a table saw, we have come up with a buyer’s guide to make your job easier. Keep reading to discover the best table saw for your woodworking needs!

Features to look for in a table saw: Buyer’s Guide

What are you going to be doing with your table saw? Transporting it from job to job? Keeping it in your garage? Moving it from inside to outside? Based on portability, table saws can be classified into various kinds, chief among them are:

  • Jobsite table saws come with a stand with transport wheels.
  • Bench top table saws are also portable and lightweight, but require a table to work on. It can however be moved from one location to another with ease.
  • Contractor and hybrid table saws are similar in speed and performance.
  • Cabinet saw type is powerful, robust, the largest and heaviest.

Hence, each type offers one of its kind features and the choice entirely depends upon your need and budget.

A flat table

If you want your cut to be up to the mark, make sure to buy a model with a perfect flat table. Well, it is a known fact that the more you pay, the better quality you get. Cast iron tables, we feel can offer superior quality and durability. Moreover, it is largely agreed that cast iron tables are the highest quality. However, we are not making any generalizations here. Even cheaper models could offer a flat, high quality table that can well serve your purpose. We suggest you check the reviews and determine the features carefully before making a purchase. If you feel the model you are considering cannot offer a flat, good quality table or superior cut quality, just lookout for a different model.

Fence and miter gauge

Most table saw manufacturers do not include a good fence unless you are paying quite a good sum. Fences are generally of an inferior make and many times buyers look at aftermarket options to replace them. However, you should remember that not all fences available out there are compatible with all the table saw models. Therefore, it is important that you look into this factor carefully before placing the order.

If your project involves making angled cuts or cross cuts, you will be required to rely on the table saw’s miter gauge. Hence, it is a wise idea to look into this as well before making the purchase.

A 2 HP motor would be sufficient for cutting smaller, thinner sheets; such motors operate on 120V. Powerful motors (3-5 HP) operate on 240V and depend upon a belt drive to transfer power to the blade. Choose a model depending upon the capacity requirement.

Dust collection

If you work with wood regularly, you will know the amount of sawdust it creates. It is not a headache if you are working outside but if you are looking to use the saw table inside, you should pay attention to dust collection.

Most of the modern, best portable table saw models come with a dust collection port that holds the dust and can be later cleared but if you are really tight on budget, check whether the table saw model you are considering is equipped to collect the dust. While some old table saw models come with a bag to collect the dust, others just don’t care how you deal with the issue.

Of course, you can always collect the dust generated by woodworking on your own. However, buying a model with a built-in system is definitely a good idea. It will not only make your life a little easier, but ensure you have a clean and efficient work space.

Safety features

When you are woodworking, make sure to be extra careful. The razor-sharp blade and the kickbacks often cause accidents which you need to be mindful of. However, the newer table saw models come with advanced safety features such as riving knives, splitters and anti-kickback pawls. Analyze the model you are looking at carefully and check whether safety guard system is incorporated within.

Table extensions, safety switches, height adjustable stand, wheels and on-board storage are some of the accessories/features that offer extra convenience. These are found with almost all the reputed table saw brands. If you have an old model, it is possible to make upgrades with new blade sets, jigs, router table, molding heads etc. These accessories enhance the basic functionality of the table saws.

Furthermore, many of the best table saws offer features unique to their particular model. For instance, the Bosch 4100-10 table saw offers a soft start feature. This is a nice little feature that will prevent motor overload and reduce the chance of tripping a circuit. Therefore, little features like this can definitely put one table saw above the other – particularly when you’re dealing with two table saws with similar specifications.

Choose the best portable table saw

Now, we hope you have a fair idea on the top 10 table saws of 2020. Analyze the different models, double-check the features and examine the accessories and quality standards. The rule of the thumb is to buy a model in accordance with your requirements. Buy an inexpensive, smaller model if you are a hobbyist or DIYer or go for an advanced version if you are a professional woodworker looking for durability.

To summarize, read our reviews twice, understand the features to look for and then decide on the model that is best for you. Buying a table saw is not just about price, power, speed and accuracy!
