What is a Compound Miter Saw?

Miter saws are used to make angled cross-cuts. Whilst cutting wood, miter saws allows you to set it and cut in different angles. It also allows you to cut your stock vertically and horizontally at the same time. There are two types of miter saws namely; the miter saw and the compound miter saw. The compound miter saw is very much the same as any ordinary miter saw but it also allows both miter cuts and bevel cuts.

While miter cuts are commonly used for joining the two ends together, forming a 90 degree angle, a compound miter saw has a pivoted arm that enables the user to tilt to other various angles. A compound miter is more suitable for a bevel cut. Compared to a miter cut, having the ability to perform bevel cuts allows a much wider range of tasks your miter saw can complete.

Other than the standard compound miter saw there are many other types or variations of the compound miter saw as well. Such as dual compound miter saw and sliding compound miter saw.

The sliding compound miter saw is similar to a standard compound miter saw but as the name suggests, the compound sliding miter saw consists of a rail that allows the saw’s blade it to slide back and forth. This makes it overall much more efficient, and this is the category the DeWalt DWS779 and DeWalt DWS780 miter saws fall into.

The dual-compound miter saw, has better use in trimming and decorative works. The dual-compound miter saw is helpful in making cuts on both right and left directions without having to move the work piece from right to left. It is quite handy and very convenient to use when completing this type of work.

  • Easy Setup.

DeWalt DWS780 Review

The DeWalt DWS780 is 12-inch double bevel sliding compound miter saw. Like the DeWalt DWS779, it is also powered by a 15-Amp motor at 3,800 RPM speed. It is a similar but upgraded version of the DWS779. As you can probably already tell, the DeWalt DWS779 and DWS780 both share many common features. However, a few new features have also been introduced. An important outstanding feature that has been integrated into the DWS780 is the XPS system that DWS779 did not offer previously. Don’t worry – we’ll go over exactly how the new XPS system works shortly.

The DWS780 also has a carbide blade which is extremely durable, a dust bag with the same dust extraction system, and an additional vertical clamp. Like all DeWalt products, the DeWalt DWS780 comes with a three-year warranty.

The XPS system casts a light onto both sides of the blade which forms a shadow onto the piece being cut. The shadow projection sharpens as the blade gets nearer to the piece. The advantage of the shadow projected by the LED light is that it shows the exact location of the cut upon the piece which is being worked on.  Furthemore, it will show you exactly how wide your cut will be. The previous laser system on the DeWalt DWS779 went out of alignment after some time making the the XPS shadow system much more effective in terms of precision. Thus, the additional XPS feature helps make a precise cut with minimal effort.

  • All the features on the DWS779.
  • More lightweight and easier to transport.
  • Comes with an extra vertical material clamp.
  • Comes with XPS shadow technology.
  • More buying options – You can upgrade the blade or buy a compatible stand.

DeWalt DWS779 vs. DWS780 - The Differences & Similarities

Both miter saws are reliable tools with many wonderful features that dominate the industry standard. You’re probably wondering, in terms of the specs – what are the differences and similarities between these two saws? The truth is, these saws are almost identical, outside out the XPS shadow technology equipped on the DeWalt DWS780. The following are some of the important aspects of the DWS779 and DWS780 that one should take into account.

1. CUT

Both units consist of a 12-inch dual sliding stainless steel miter blade. Howbeit, owing to its composition, it is more abrasion resistant in comparison to DWS779 blade. The Dewalt DWS780 also provides an additional carbide blade. Carbide blades are low maintenance and more durable. Blades are made of tungsten and carbon that is denser than other materials. It works efficiently under high temperatures. It is more abrasive and durable. Carbide blade is a plus that DeWalt machines offer.

Both tools have the same impressive cutting capacity. It has also capable of 2×16 inches crosscuts for 90° and 2×12 inches of bevel cuts for 45°. It handles to cut through lumber, as thick as 12 inches.

The double bevel cut feature of both the miter saws allow the user to effortlessly cut any piece of lumber without having to flip it from one side to another. It allows to tilt the blade from left and also to right.

The Dewalt DWS780 comes with a new amazing feature of the XPS system. It allows a shadow to be projected on to the work-piece. It enables a more accurate and precise cut. This XPS system is also a great way for amateurs to have that extra advantage for making deadly accurate cuts. The shadow cut is always on point and you’ll never have to worry about low quality cuts.

Unsurprisingly, the Dewalt DWS780 runs a bit higher than the Dewalt DWS779. However, many believe this price is justified with the additional technology of the DWS780. Of course, the additional XPS laser system makes the DW780 much more valuable and overall more efficient to use, but if you’re not in need of this additional feature, or you’re just trying to save some money – it might be a good idea to settle on the DWS779. Alternatively, you can install the XPS shadow system yourself to save some money and still gain the benefits of the XPS shadow technology.

A key feature of utmost importance, upon which the overall performance of the tools depends is the motor. Both the units deliver perfectly with an incredibly powerful 15-Amp motor.  Both the motors spin the blade at 3,800 RPM.

DeWalt promises their dust extraction system will collect 75% of loose dust from your stock. This feature applies to both the DWS779 and DWS780. Both saws come with a small bag that attaches to the dust collection port. The bag is relatively small, so you may have to empty it fairly often depending on the type of woodworking projects you’ll be completing.

One issue with the dust collection port is the small size of the dust port. If you have an external dust collection system, the dust port on the DeWalt miter saws isn’t going to be compatible with it because of its skinny size. However, we simply took some electrical tape and taped it around the dust port to thicken it up, and it works just fine. However, keep in mind, the small bag that comes with it works just fine, and this was a personal preference.

Both DeWalt miter saws come with a user guide, a carbide blade, a blade wrench, a user guide, and the miter saw itself . In comparison, the DeWalt DWS780 comes with all these accessories, plus a vertical clamp.

The DeWalt DWS779 is 67 lbs. The DeWalt DWS780 is much lighter at only 56 lbs. Although this doesn’t seem like a big difference, it does make the DWS780 much easier to carry around, transport, and store. This is the one features, other than the XPS technology, that makes the DeWalt DWS780 shine over the DWS779. However, if you’re not constantly transporting your miter saw, this shouldn’t

Both miter saws have a rail lock that helps in the vertical cutting of the stock as well as a cam lock that helps in angle adjustment and locks at a specific angle.

9. Warranty

A huge perk to all Dewalt products is the 3-year limited warranty. Of course, if you take proper care of these tools and perform standard maintenance every so often, these tools should last close to a lifetime.

The Best Features on both the Dewalt DWS779 and DWS780

The best features that both the miter saws possess are the back fence that cuts up to 2×16-dimensional lumber at 90-degrees, 2×12 at 45-degrees. DeWalt offers amazing fence systems that not all machines have. It is quite handy for all woodworkers regardless of whether they belong to a beginner or advanced level of woodworking. The fence system is quite functional as it enables the user to cut at different angles.

The dust extraction although not perfect, is still far better than what most miter saws have to offer. It will keep your work place clean and protect your skin, nose, and eyes from loose sawdust flying around in the air. Of course, you should always follow further safety measures to stay safe, such as wearing construction pants and a face mask, but this is a good starting point.

Furthermore, you’ll be able to use your machine right out of the box. The setup is practically not existent and everything comes square so you won’t have to worry about additional adjustments or inaccurate alignments.

DeWalt offers some of the best machines on the market, and these miter saws are no exception.
