Features

The Dewalt DW734 with Three Knife Cutter-Head wood planer has a powerful 15-amp motor that spins at 10,000 RPM, providing 96 cuts per inch. This will enable you to cut into any type of wood, even the toughest hardwoods.

The high-speed steel knives are extremely durable, lasting up to 30% longer than traditional knives. Furthermore, the knives are reversible and disposable. This will save you time re-sharpening dull blades and ensuring you have a consistent cut. The blades are easy to change out as the cutter-head goes through holes located on the knife.

Dust is a major issue when it comes to benchtop planers. Therefore, the Dewalt D734 Benchtop Planer is equipped with a dust collector port that can be attached to a shop vacuum or dust collector.

The stainless-steel infeed and outfeed tables allow for material up to 33-1/2 inches. It also has a four-column carriage lock that prevents any movement that may cause snipe. The carriage lock is optional if you’re making quick cuts, but a unique feature that will eliminate the possibility of material damage when used. There are also adjustable bolts underneath the tables that will allow you to adjust the height to match the interior table. This will further reduce the chance of snipe.

The top has a crank that allows you to lower or raise your depth of cut. A full rotation of the crank will give you a depth of cut of 1/16th. You can rotate the crank in intervals for maximum control of your cuts.

On the front is a scale that reads the thickness you’re aiming to achieve. This scale can be adjusted accordingly with the arrow pointer located next to it.

Also, on the front is a small gauge that reads the thickness you’re taking off your material. This is a unique feature that will allow you to get the cutter-head to the perfect position.

Furthermore, the motor contains a reset button. This feature will come in handy in case the motor gets jammed or overheats. This will prevent the motor from burning out or suffering from damage.

How did the Dewalt DW734 Impress Customers?

Customers liked several features on the Dewalt DW734 Benchtop Planer. First and foremost, customers enjoyed the depth gauge and the additional material gauge showing the amount of material that will be removed. Both work extremely well and guarantee accuracy when making cuts.

The benchtop planer also has some serious power behind it. Customers said despite being small and portable, this machine can cut any wood like butter. Portability is another advantage to this planer. Equipped with a foldable table and weighing only 80 lbs., moving this planer from one location to another shouldn’t be too difficult.

Furthermore, customers liked the fact that the Dewalt DW734 includes all the tools you need for adjusting, attaching and removing components. The knives are extremely easy to change with the hole and pin system and don’t require re-sharpening like other planers typically do. Overall, the machine is extremely user friendly and easy to operate, regardless of your skill level.

One of the more popular features is the cutter-head lock system. This system guarantees your cutter-head will stay in place and eliminate any potential snipe. The Dewalt DW734 blows other planers away in terms of eliminating snipe.

What Customers Disliked about the Dewalt DW734

The biggest complaint we received from this lunchbox planer is the noise. It has an extremely powerful motor and the noise can get unbearable at times. We tested the sound with a standard cut, and it registered at 110 decibels. While this might be okay for a couple runs, we highly recommend wearing hearing protection when using this planer.

Without using a dust collector, some customers complained that while most of the additional sawdust was shot forward, some would collect onto the lumber they pushed through and occasionally get stuck on the wood. This can be fixed by simply sanding the surface with a light grade sandpaper. Also, we recommend purchasing a shop vacuum to avoid any such issues, as sawdust is not only hazardous to your health, but a hassle to clean up. If you don’t already have a sawdust collector, we highly recommend checking out the Dewalt DXV10P 10 Gallon Quiet Poly Wet Dry Vacuum Yellow.

What’s the Final Verdict?

The Dewalt DW734 is an excellent benchtop planer that contains a lot of great features that make the woodworking experience as smooth as possible. The simplicity of changing the blades, the locking mechanism on the cutter-head to eliminate snipe, and the adjustability of the table makes this benchtop planer an excellent choice for all woodworkers. Not only is it easy to setup; it’s extremely user-friendly. It’s powerful, portable, and can handle any job—big or small. Overall, it’s one of the best benchtop planer’s on the market and well worth the price.
